The main character of the story is Varvara Ivanovna Slootskaya. She is a former teacher, who is now retired. Varvara likes reading detective novels by Agatha Christie and poking her nose everywhere. Varvara Ivanovna moves into an apartment to her son Roman and his wife Alena in order to help with raising grandchildren Gosha and Lisa. Initially, Varvara Ivanovna's relationship with her daughter-in-law does not work out very smoothly: two housewives "in the same kitchen" always get along in a tough way.
